JUNIOR YEAR PLANNING CHECKLIST

September
- Begin to organize a record of your grades, extra-curricular activities, volunteer work, professional experience and any awards.
- Attend the college, technical school, and military representative visits for the institutions you are interested in attending. The Guidance Office hosts many institutions at MCJSHS each year during the STAR period. Listen to the announcements and sign up for those you are interested in..
- Register early for the PSAT, which will be given in the fall.
- Check for and attend local college fairs or open houses. Information about open houses is available in the Guidance Office or on a school’s website.
October
- Continue exploring your career interests and investigate schools that offer preparation for your career interest.
- Attend the college, technical school, and military representative visits for the institutions you are interested in attending.
- Attend the Indiana County counselors Association College/Career Fair.
- Take the PSAT/NMSQT exam.
November
- Attend the college, technical school, and military representative visits for the institutions you are interested in attending.
December
- Review your PSAT/NMSQT results to determine areas that need improvement.
- Consider registering for the March SAT at www.collegeboard.com.
- Consider registering for the February ACT at www.actstudent.org.
- Continue exploring your career interests and investigate schools that offer preparation for your career interests.
January
- If you are planning on applying to one of the U.S. Service Academies, contact your senator or congressperson for a recommendation.
February
- Consider registering for the March SAT at www.collegeboard.com.
- Consider registering for the April ACT at www.actstudent.org.
- Develop a list of possible colleges, technical schools, or other post-secondary options. Discuss these options with your parent/guardians. Refer to the institution’s website or the information in the Guidance Office for specific admissions policies, procedures and deadlines.
- Attend the Pittsburgh National College Fair with your parents so you can speak with representatives and sign up to receive more information and admission materials.
March
- Review the Marion Center Course Description Book to plan your schedule for your senior year.
- If interested in pursuing Division I or II athletics in college, meet with your coach and register with the NCAA Clearinghouse online at www.eligibilitycenter.org.
April
- Consider registering for the June SAT exam at www.collegeboard.com.

- Gather application materials for the college you plan on applying to in the fall.
Governor's School for the Sciences-
Juniors interested in a Science based career- What an opportunity this can be for you!!
The Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Sciences (PGSS) is a 5-week residency STEM program for rising high school seniors in Pennsylvania. There is no cost to attend the program – tuition, room, and board are fully covered for each student. The students will live at Carnegie Mellon University’s Pittsburgh campus and take classes from CMU and Pittsburgh-area professors. Classes include core courses in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and physics, electives, experimental laboratories in the five core subjects, and team research projects. PGSS provides an opportunity for passionate young scientists to take college-level course work, get hands-on research experience, and explore their interests in STEM while surrounded by like-minded peers and supportive staff and faculty.
