Academic Eligibility

Students participating in athletics cannot be failing more than one class - regardless of credit value. The grades are checked for eligibility status each week, with a one-week penalty for not meeting the requirements. Students who are considered ineligible for three (3) consecutive weeks are ineligible for the remainder of the season.  Students cannot be eligible for part of a week. Students failing more than one class on a report card are denied participation until after the sixteenth day following the issuance. For fall sports, final class grades from the recently completed year are a determining factor. An athlete who failed more than one class will be ineligible to participate in any pre-season practices, etc. for the following year until the sixteenth day after the official start date. On the sixteenth day of practice, the student would be eligible to receive equipment. The student must then participate in a minimum of five days of team practice before competing.  Students involved in extracurricular activities are subject to the same attendance and academic eligibility guidelines as athletes.

Attendance Eligibility

Students involved in extracurricular activities must be present by 9:00 a.m. in order to participate in practices, games, competitions, performances, etc. on that same school day.  Students absent from school on the day of an athletic or extracurricular events are NOT permitted to attend practices, games, competitions, performances, etc. unless permission is granted from the high school principal.  Additionally, students participating in PIAA sports must be in attendance for 45 days following the 20th day of absence during a semester before becoming eligible. As with academic eligibility, attendance does carry into the next school year.

Student Conduct Eligibility

The head coach of each program develops the rules for tryouts, participation, and behavior. All participants are expected to follow the rules and demonstrate proper conduct at all times - during practices - at home and away. A student may, at any time, be withdrawn from competition if his/her citizenship is such that he/she is considered an unworthy representative of the Marion Center Area School District. Expectations and consequences regarding student conduct are detailed in the Discipline Policy.  MCASD "ineligibility" denies participation in practices, scrimmages, events and team travel.
